5th Set of Mini - Lessons: Isabel, Paloma & Lonyee

Isabelle- Her lesson was on Jazz Basics or a pirouette class for 8th graders. I liked that she had a PowerPoint describing all the moves that would be done for the warmup. This is good for all students to follow along and for all types of learners including those who might be disabled in any way, shape, or form. She did the same for the pirouette practice. She was great at explaining every move and how to prepare for the pirouette. Breaking the steps down was very helpful especially because her class is for 8th graders. She also asked whether there were questions from anyone which is good to ensure that everyone is on the same page. She also had a video for everyone to see what to expect which was nice. She was great at showing moves, cooling down, and then asking questions at the end. All in all it was a well-rounded and engaging class. 


Paloma- She was teaching a hip hop class for 6th graders. She started by talking about the Miami Dade components in the curriculum that she wanted to highlight. Then she did a quick warm-up and later went on to showing the moves. She also had a PowerPoint as a visual aid which is helpful for students to know what to expect next. I enjoyed that she talked about how you can adjust movements to make them slower, faster, or more comfortable for you. She had very fun videos that were appropriate for the age of the children and for the types of movements she was teaching. She also had a class exercise to put into practice what the students learned during the class which is a great way of tying everything up together.


Lonyee- She taught tap dance for 9th graders. I thought it was interesting that she added some background history of the dance because it helps in understanding where it comes from before actually trying it. She also talked about tap shoes and their importance or what makes them unique. She had a video to explain and show the importance of the noise they make in the dancing. Her powerpoint was nice because she explained the lesson and gave structure and names to the steps she would be teaching in class. Her warm-up was good for stretching the parts they would be using for tap dancing as well. It was not too hard or advanced but good for the age level. I do think that she went a little fast, but she did say this was a level 2 class. I do think she was great at explaining because it is hard to break down and explain a lot of those moves. She also made students to break up into groups and tried to engage the online class aswell.

 


Jazz Basics: Pirouettes - 8th grade -

Warmup

10 jumping jacks
10 high knees
Overhead arm stretches to left + right Center Plies
Forward lunges to left + right
Head and shoulder rolls

Take the rest of the song to stretch what you need to and get some water!

Center: Pirouette Preparation Practice

Tendu right, back, plie prep with arms second, fourth Push up into passe, releve when you feel ready Repeat on left side

Spotting: Find a point to spot with your head as you turn. Look at the point until you can’t anymore , and then flip your head around to the other side to find the point again. This will help you know where you are in space, and not get dizzy

Engage your core, and keep your passe high and connected to your leg Try a single turn!
